Let\u2019s take a look at a few examples in the news.<\/p>\n<p>Construction penalties in Edmonton, Alberta. As a result of construction delays, the city demanded penalty payments. These may prove disastrous for the contractor. According to a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/edmonton\/rash-of-delayed-city-projects-means-millions-in-penalty-payments-1.3029921\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">news story<\/a>: &#8220;The Quesnell Bridge, a $161-million project, was years behind schedule by the time it opened in 2011 [\u2026] The contractor went bankrupt paying penalties to the city for those delays.&#8221; In other cases, contractors lost potential bonus payments when they failed to complete the project ahead of schedule.<\/p>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: disc;\">\n<li>Keeping up with demands. Recruiting qualified staff to construction projects is starting to become more difficult. <a href=\"\/blog\/how-to-overcome-construction-labor-shortage-with-technology\/\">Construction labor shortages<\/a> directly translate into two problems. According to a <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2017\/05\/18\/real_estate\/home-building-construction-labor-shortage-home-prices\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CNN report<\/a>, home builders are paying higher wages to lure staff away from rivals. In addition, projects are taking longer to complete. One Texas builder commented, &#8220;Homes that used to take eight months now take us 10 months.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Construction lags behind other industries in productivity. Over the past few decades, the manufacturing industry has become significantly more productive. Construction has not kept pace. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.economist.com\/news\/leaders\/21726693-and-how-governments-can-catalyse-change-construction-industrys-productivity-problem\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Economist<\/a> highlights the problem in these terms:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Since 1995 the global average value-added per hour has grown at around a quarter of the rate in manufacturing. According to McKinsey, no industry has done worse [&#8230;] In France and Italy productivity per hour has fallen by about a sixth. Germany and Japan have seen almost no growth. America is even worse: there, productivity in construction has plunged by half since the late 1960s.<\/p>\n<p>With these productivity challenges, construction leaders need every tool they can obtain. Part of the answer lies in using technology to support better management.<\/p>\n<h2>How Using a Construction Daily Report Boosts Productivity<\/h2>\n<p>Managers need high quality information to manage their operations. In a very small company, you might be able to operate without reports. With a handful of people, you will know each person working for you. That casual approach falls apart as you start to grow.<\/p>\n<p>If you have staff spread across multiple construction projects, how do you track all that work? Using a daily report process makes it possible.<\/p>\n<p>By bringing problems to light quickly, your managers and staff have the opportunity to solve problems more quickly. Let\u2019s look at two ways you can implement daily reports to increase productivity.<\/p>\n<h2>Construction Daily Reports for Project Management<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"\/blog\/before-becoming-a-construction-project-manager\">Project managers<\/a> are trained to use processes and systems to deliver complex projects on time. To support their success, equip project managers with training (e.g. Project Management Institute certifications) and technology (e.g. Microsoft Project).<\/p>\n<p>It may not be practical to ask everyone on your team to learn how to use complex software like Microsoft Project. Instead, you can gather basic information for construction management to keep your people productive. Here are a few suggestions:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: disc;\">\n<li>Materials out of stock. Running out of wood, concrete and other materials at the construction site slows down everything. Ask your workers to report in when they see inventory levels are low.<\/li>\n<li>Broken tools. Construction tools eventually wear out from use. The faster you learn about that issue, the faster you can have the problem fixed.<\/li>\n<li>Schedule requests. Provide a space on a daily report for workers to request time off for vacation, sick leave and other purposes. First, congratulations!
