The Big Announcement

The Nemetschek Group has signed a definitive agreement to acquire all shares of GoCanvas for around a 11.5x multiple on 2023 ARR of $67M, or well over $700 million. This strategic acquisition aligns with Nemetschek’s mission to enhance its Build Segment, which offers subscription and SaaS products designed to simplify customers’ jobs and integrate seamlessly with other AEC/O solutions and platforms. GoCanvas will complement Nemetschek’s existing offerings, enabling flexible cloud and mobile field worker solutions that help customers efficiently collect real-time data, collaborate across worksites, create digital checklists, make data-driven business decisions, and replace paperwork with smart, simple workflows. The Nemetschek Group is acquiring GoCanvas from K1 Investment Management. The acquisition is expected to close in the summer of 2024, pending customary regulatory approvals and closing conditions. Post-acquisition, GoCanvas CEO Viyas Sundaram and his team will join the Nemetschek Group and continue to drive the business. Moelis & Company LLC acted as the exclusive financial advisor, and Kirkland & Ellis LLP and Morris, Manning & Martin, LLP served as legal advisors to GoCanvas for this transaction.

What’s new

Device Magic has a new trick up its sleeve: driver’s license scanning functionality. This feature has been incorporated as an intelligent field option within our drag-and-drop mobile form builder. So what does that mean? By adding the drivers license field to a form, you will be able to capture multiple, individual pieces of ID data when a user scans the barcode on the back of a license. You can then build in conditional logic to trigger real time actions based on the captured data. For example, if the scanned license is expired, you can set up an automated notification for user license renewal.

See how it works

Device Magic’s driver’s license scan feature works on any state- or province-issued ID in the United States or Canada. This includes driver’s licenses, personal identification cards and commercial driver’s licenses (CDLs). The driver’s license scan field can be used on its own as a form or be incorporated as a question within a longer form, such as pre-trip inspection checklists. When a user scans the ID barcode, the feature default captures the following individual fields:

  • ID holder’s first name
  • ID holder’s last name
  • Date of birth
  • ID or driver’s license number
  • ID or driver’s license issue date
  • ID or driver’s license expiration date

PRODUCT UPDATE: Device Magic’s web forms app now supports dispatch functionality

October 4, 2021 – Dispatch functionality is now enabled for Device Magic’s web forms app to further enhance workflow capabilities across mobile- and web-based users.

Device Magic users can leverage the dispatch feature to send forms with pre-loaded data, such as details for a work order, to a web forms app user. The dispatched form will automatically show up in the dispatch tab when the team member logs into the web forms app on their laptop, desktop or other web-supported device. This includes geo-located and geo-fenced dispatches.

Dispatch workflows can also be created between mobile- and web-based users. This allows administrators to automate the collection and distribution of data across their entire team, no matter which digital device they are using. Customize dispatch workflows to send forms in an ordered sequence to all team members who need to fill out information before passing it to the final destination.

Raleigh, N.C. – March 22, 2021 – Device Magic, an industry-leading mobile data collection platform, announced today the introduction of Microsoft Excel files as a data submission format option for a variety of destination types. Device Magic users will now have the option to create and upload customized Excel report templates when selected as the submission format for available destinations.

The new feature expands report customization capabilities by allowing users to leverage Excel functions to manipulate submitted form data. Key functionalities include enhanced calculations and data organization, such as the incorporation of charts and pivot tables.

“The demand for enhanced data reporting and analysis is growing exponentially across the industries we serve,” said Peter Schulz, vice president of product development at Device Magic. “We introduced the customizable Excel template feature to further enable our customers to deliver timely reports in the formats their clients and stakeholders expect.”

The Evolution of Device Magic

It’s been quite the journey since our inception as a small startup in 2011. It all started with the vision of our founders, Dusan Babich and Mike Welham, two veterans of the mobile technology space from South Africa. After forming a company that built developer tools for Nokia/Symbian smartphones, they saw an opportunity to build a mobile forms solution that would improve mobile productivity and data capture for workers in the field.

After being incorporated in Johannesburg, Device Magic was incubated in Dallas, Texas and opened its first U.S. office in 2014. In 2015, the small team headed east and established headquarters in Raleigh, North Carolina. Centered in one of the fastest growing tech hubs in the nation and surrounded by a boundless talent pool, Device Magic began expanding at a rapid pace.
